Nexon Expert Review
First Look Review
What is it?
If you utter the words special edition cars in India today, the first name that comes to mind is Tata. Since 2019, they have been launching special editions of their vehicles one after the other. First, it was a dark edition of the Harrier, followed by an adventure persona for the Safari and then another round of dark editions followed by a gold edition for the Safari and then a dark edition for the Safari.
They are back yet again and this time around with not one but four unique propositions. What you see in the photos are the recently launched Kaziranga editions of the Tata Punch, Nexon, Harrier and the Safari. Why Kaziranga as its theme? Because Tata has chosen to honour the Rhino as it is an endangered species that has a majority of its population located in the grasslands of the Kaziranga national park in Assam.
Tata Punch
The Tata Punch Kaziranga edition is based on the top-of-the-line Punch Creative and Creative iRA trims. It can be had in both MT and AT guise. On the outside, this Punch has been painted in a special shade called Grassland beige with a piano black contrast-coloured roof. The front fenders get Rhino badges while the wheels and ORVMs have been blacked out as a part of the package.
Inside, this being a top-of-the-line model, you get all the bells and whistles offered with the Punch but also some custom Kaziranga touches like this dual-tone leatherette upholstery, piano black AC vents as well as this black leather wrap for the steering and gear knob.
The only engine on offer is of course Tata’s 1.2-litre petrol producing 85bhp/113Nm which can be had with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automated manual. We have of course driven the Punch extensively and you can find a link above. The Tata Punch Kaziranga range has been priced from Rs 8.58 lakh to Rs 9.48 lakh (ex-showroom).
Next up on the list is the Tata Nexon Kaziranga Edition. Like the Punch Kaziranga, it can be had only in the top-spec XZ+/XZA+ trim level for both the petrol and diesel powertrain option. In addition to everything that Tata offers for the Nexon, this edition introduces ventilated front seats, auto-dimming IRVM and an air purifier as a part of the upgrades and should be available on the standard versions of the car in the coming months. The rhino silhouette on the headrests has been carried over from the Punch.
As a part of the Kaziranga package, it too has been trimmed out in the grassland beige exterior paint scheme with the black rhino logos on the fenders, blacked-out ORVMs, door cladding roof rails and alloy wheels. Inside, you get the wood finish dashboard, dark chrome accents on the gear lever and drive mode dial as well as the brown and black colour scheme for the upholstery. You can have the Nexon with either 1.2-litre petrol or a 1.2-litre diesel. Both engines get a six-speed manual or a six-speed automated manual.
The Tata Nexon Kaziranga range has been priced in the range of Rs 11.78 lakh to Rs 13.73 lakh (ex-showroom)
The big guns of the Tata SUV range have joined the theme party this time around. Both the Safari and Harrier Kaziranga editions are available in their top-spec MT and AT versions and thus come fully loaded. Like the Punch and Nexon, they too get the Grassland beige paint scheme, rhino logos on the fenders, blacked-out ORVMs, alloy wheels, roof rails and side cladding.
Both cars get ventilated front seats, air purifier, wireless apple car play and Android Auto, iRA connected car technology and a wireless charger. In addition, the Safari also gets ventilated seats for the second row, something that was introduced with the Safari gold editions. Both cars are only offered with a 2.0-litre diesel engine that produces 168bhp/350Nm and can be had with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
The Tata Harrier Kaziranga range is priced from Rs 20.40 lakh to Rs 21.70 lakh (ex-showroom). The Tata Safari Kaziranga range is priced from Rs 20.99 lakh to Rs 22.39 lakh (ex-showroom).
Conclusion
So there you have it, the Tata Kaziranga UV range in all their grassland glory. While these may be special editions, their additional feature list is indicative of what is expected to arrive as upgrades for each of the respective vehicles this year. What’s more, one special edition of the Tata Punch will be auctioned off during IPL 2022 to raise funds for wildlife conservation at Kaziranga.

Opening
When Tata introduced its BS6 Nexon facelift back in January 2020, the updates included refreshed styling (both in and out), a longer list of features, and better breathing versions of the same engines. It couldn’t have come at a more apt time as the car had started to show its age (originally launched in 2017). As for the BS6 turbocharged powertrains, it’s the 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel; both available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an AMT unit. We were able to get our hands on the diesel variant with a manual gearbox. Here’s what you need to know if you were looking to splurge on one.
Appearance Exterior
The updated Nexon takes the already contemporary styling to the next level. For one, you can easily binge-watch on the refreshed nose that’s got sleeker headlamps with them scintillating tri-arrow internals as the DRLs, and sharp alloys. Admittedly, the flush use of silver trim to highlight the fog lamp section plus those cutesy wind-mill designs lend it tonnes of appeal; even at the rear. What’s more, the Nexon stands out due to the unique white-band streak that flows on to the boot-lid and is complemented by the raked roofline that’s adorned in the same shade.
Appearance Interior
On the inside, one can spot the all-new digital instrumentation cluster, a lively textured finish on the dash with brighter coloured trim, and the new attractive steering from the Tiago/Altroz, all of which make the cabin feel exceedingly refreshing. Everything else is similar to the earlier car, so you continue to get superior visibility and facile ingress thanks to its doors swinging almost 90-degrees.
As for the cabin, some soft-touch materials would have tremendously improved the feel, however, hard plastic is what you get. Also, the glossy inserts may look swell but they reflect harshly under the sun. Even ergonomics in some areas aren’t up to the mark, like the upright stalks and the protruding centre console that makes using the dead pedal (intended for comfort) more uncomfortable.
In terms of practicality, it’s up there with the best, thanks to numerous stowage areas. Moreover, owing to its spaciousness, there’s ample shoulder- and head-room in the front row which is further complemented by the comfy seat-cushioning all over. Even seating three passengers at the rear doesn’t break a sweat. Lastly, what augments the 350-litre boot is the 60:40 split-folding rear bench that’s otherwise great for big suitcases and some soft bags.Features-wise, this XZ+ variant gets projector headlamps with LED DRLS, sunroof, auto AC, cruise control, digital instrument cluster, rear parking sensors, and also the ‘IRA’ feature for its connectivity needs. In terms of safety, the Nexon boasts of a five-star NCAP safety rating, dual airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, ISOFIX fasteners, ESP and traction control, hill and brake assist, and more.
Performance Drive
To start with, power remains unchanged with a similar 108bhp/260Nm from the BS6 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel motor that’s offered with either a six-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. We have the manual variant for this review. Now, unlike most diesels, this one needs some extra initial revving to get it off the mark, which is surprising because the paperwork mentions that maximum torque supposedly flows in from 1,500rpm.In reality, the true momentum only happens once past 2,000rpm. At which point, the engine gets noisy and feels strained, which shouldn’t be the case. But if you can put the unrefined nature and slow-speed flexibility aside, there’s a rather abundant and strong mid-range in store. As the turbo kicks in, the strong power delivery mildly pins the occupants into their seats.
With so much mid-range grunt, there’s never a driving need that requires one to drag the motor to its 4,000rpm redline. Plus, on highways, frequent downshifts won’t be required to keep the momentum up and a quick overtake is as simple as flooring the throttle so that the turbo-boost takes care of the rest. The key here is to keep the revs just over 2,000rpm for optimum responses.
As for the gearbox, although notchy, the reasonably light clutch diffuses the effort substantially, for instance, in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Besides that, there are three driving modes - Eco, City, and Sport. Granted that the changes are barely noticeable, while ‘Eco’ is the least responsive due to its undivided focus on frugality, ‘Sport’ makes this engine the most alive and noisy. Overall, ‘Comfort’ is the best bet for most relaxed driving chores. The ride and handling department is where the Nexon shines the most. It’s impressive because it not only absorbs bumps splendidly at slower speeds but also offers its occupants a flat ride as the velocity increases. Plus, it manages to retain its composure while trampling upon broken stretches at highway speeds; the assurance from the 209mm clearance being evident here.
Similarly, the steering has got the right amount of heft, feels fairly direct, and more importantly, offers great progression around the dead centre. Armed with these, the wide track and grip from the 215mm-section tyres, attacking corners is nothing short of thrilling by compact SUV standards. And, this is despite the substantial body roll. Conversely, we’d have loved some more bite from its brakes for a more reassuring drive.
Conclusion
The refreshed Nexon is one of the best-looking compact SUVs our roads have ever seen. It also gets some added features to make the package more attractive. To add to it, even the diesel-manual prices that range from Rs 10.14 - Rs 15.61 lakh (OTR Mumbai) is bang-on-target when compared to the Hyundai Venue, Kia’s Sonet, the Mahindra XUV300, and the Ford EcoSport. That said, if you’re hunting for a looker that has supreme safety standards, unmatched highway driving dynamics along with a spacious cabin, we suggest you take a look at the Tata Nexon.

Tata Nexon Expert Review
2022 Tata Punch, Nexon Harrier and Safari Kaziranga Edition First Look

- Whats Good
Only Marketing!
What Can ImproveYes, it’s true the looks and features we became so much fan off, were not so smart features after all. In plain and simple words the common-sense was totally missing from this vehicle. Yes, you read it correctly, the common sense is not their at all in TATA NEXON XZ+. First, the Dancing Mirrors Scenario:- You just came out of your home and stepped in your car as soon as you will push the “Start/Stop (SS) Button only once. Your rear blower will start? Dude I am sitting in the front. You should have started the front blowers. As mostly it’s single passengers sitting in the Cars so why the hell in the world you are starting the rear blower first. Strange it is. Then for the Front blowers you press the SS button once again. Okay the Ignition is “ON” now, with front blowers. Good, but why the hell the Side View mirrors are opening. I have not even started the car yet and maybe I was just not going to go anywhere at all but why the Side View mirrors are opening if I am not going anywhere. Talked to TATA MOTORS, they said it’s a Welcome feature in Top variant, so can’t do much about it! Okay, then I closed the Rear view mirrors by pushing the inner controller downward. Cool, they are close now. Now, I start the Engine to go to my office by pressing the SS button (along with Clutch) third time, engine starts, perfect. Side View Mirrors open again. Dude you just lost it. It’s insane. I am such a driver that never uses the Rear view mirrors, and always do the lane driving! So, TATA engineers should have given some sort of disabling mechanism for Side View mirrors’ traumatic dance moves again n again! Keep it simple guys and don’t make a mess of such AI integration. We are humans and we don’t need such repeated welcomes by our daily ride just for starting engine. Twice jeez! Mockery of the SS Button Suppose you have just reached somewhere, want to Stop the car engine, and simply need to wait for someone and keep the Blower/ Fan “ON”. Dude you need to press the SS button three times! Just to “Stop the Engine and keep the FAN ON”. Let me do it for you. First SS Button press shuts the ENGINE OFF (along with Ignition + FAN + Rear Blower, everything “OFF”). Second Press, re-starts the rear blower. Third press, re-starts the front blower / fan for you. Now you can wait for your someone! TATA engineers could have just Shut the Engine off and kept the Fan/ Blower running in the single press isn’t it simple and easy! But TATA don’t want you to wait for anybody in your car. Specially with your fan “ON”. Or be ready to press it three repeated times! Second, the Central locking again without common-sense. Guys, you’re just not safe in TATA NEXON specially the XZ+ model…..yes the top variant is specially designed for only those people who have enough of money to be targeted by robbers again and again! Don’t believe me. Just trying stopping at any red-light and and and don’t try to STOP the engine. ever ever ever. Forget the fuel economy / environment pollution / fuel conservation don’t Switch OFF your engine at any cost. Because, the moment you will do this. NEXON has opened all the four gates for your being vulnerable to robbers outside your car! THIS HAS BEEN THE MOST SHOCKING OF THEM ALL! It’s been one month now. I never switched off my engine at any red-light or anywhere other than my office or my home I FEEL SCARED. IN NEXON XZ+. AS I CANNOT TURN OFF MY ENGINE ANYWHERE AT ALL. I MUST, IMMEDIATELY PRESS THE LOCK/UNLOCK KEY DOWN BELOW TO RE-LOCK ALL YOUR DOORS. AND JUST HOPE THAT YOU ARE FAST ENOUGH THAT NO ROBBER/ MOLESTER / RAPER HOPPED IN YOUR CAR YOU WILL START FEELING SAFE AGAIN IN YOUR CAR! Third only until you open your drivers’ door unlock lever! Yes, I travel mostly alone from my home to office and then back! The moment I open my (driver) unlock lever, all the doors will open. Dude this is not Central locking! If I need to open all the doors I will use the Lock/Unlock Button on the front console! I am just opening my Doors lever to unlock and TATA has once again left you completely vulnerable……by opening all four doors! You can also add My Laptop on the Back seat, lying their with all Car gates open for the uninvited snatcher. Just waiting to be picked jeez I’m once again scared, even my laptop is scared now! Now you know. Why I told that common-sense is missing in this Car! Fourth, You cannot leave your Elderly people inside the Car…… in a NEXON XZ+. Yes, don’t blame TATA for this. You should not bring any Non-technical (or not so tech friendly people along with you in the NEXON car) or teach them to immediately press the Lock/Unlock key (on Dashboard) for closing all doors & for their own safety. Scenario:- My father/ mother both senior citizens, sitting in the car me driving okay. Now, I stop for a moment to bring something from the Market en-route they both are still sitting within the car! I think I should leave them with atleast fan/blower “ON” or they may suffer due to lack of ventilation / air! So, the Ignition is kept “ON”. So the blower can work. Now you stepped out of the car, you just pulled your door unlock- lever. Once again all the doors are open. Immediately teach them to press the Dashboard Key with “Lock/Unlock” Icon on it. Because even if you are carrying the Key in your pocket…….and you try to lock the Car by the key in your hand from outside. All the doors will remain open as the Ignition is “ON”! What good is the Mainkey button Lock when the Ignition is “ON” – NO Good.! Only way to close “ALL” the doors in such a scenario. Make your not so Tech-friendly old parents, learn some tech finally as TATA has once again left them totally vulnerable from outside attacks! I hope you are getting to the main issues, I’m trying to highlight here! Mileage, please don’t ask not atleast me please! My car has just ran 500 Kms in total run and the average shown in the meter for that 500 kms is 10.0 Yes, the Trip meter which I never reset right from the start is showing the average of 10 kms for the whole life distance of 500 kms. Forget the claims TATA motors / or ARAI did for 17 kms average! You’re most welcome to see my Trip meter with 500kms total Car run at 10.0 kms average! Live example for you to see. I had a word yesterday at my Dealer –SAGAR MOTORS, Noida sector -5. Mr. Sanjeevan Kant Sahastri (9811 XXX XXX). He simply said please don’t go with the Meter gauge. They do not show the true picture! Go for full –tank and then do the Mileage calculations. I mean okay but didn’t he meant to say that the Tata Fixed our NEXON vehicles with Faulty Meters. On enquiring further he said he is a New joiner from SKODA Motors and he agreed that my above mentioned points are very valid and their must be some way to disable them through some computer setting” but the actual person who can do this is not present now”. So maybe tomorrow he replied. When the engineer will come they will inform me.
