Grand i10 Nios Expert Review
Opening
This is the new Grand i10 Nios and according to Hyundai this is their offering to the millennials, which possibly puts me out of the buying list. If you are one, should you consider it? Read on to know more about the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.
Appearance Exterior
The Hyundai Santro drew some polarised opinions. The Grand i10 Nios, on the other hand, is a relatively safe and attractive design. The front gets the family cascading grille and we're glad it’s all black with no chrome on it. The grille also gets these very cool boomerang shaped DRLs, flanked by sporty looking swept back projector headlamps. It also has projector foglamps housed in a vertical cavity.
On the sides, the 15-inch diamond cut alloys and the roof rails give its profile a sporty stance. Highlighting the strong brand are the Grand i10 initials etched on the C-pillar.
The rear is a relatively simple affair. A short spoiler and a plastic faux diffuser add to the sporty bits. The wrap around tail lamps are pretty run of the mill but it also has an emergency stop signal which flashes upon hard braking. Overall, the Grand i10 Nios is a sporty looking hatchback and the millennials should be drawn towards it.
Appearance Interior
The interior is welcoming and it has a nice seamless design. The front seats are very comfy albeit without adjustable headrests. The rear bench has adequate legroom, but what is impressive is the under thigh support which works very well for long distance trips. Now the Grand i10 Nios will make for a comfy four-seater but like all compact hatchbacks, seating five will be a bit of a squeeze.
Its infotainment needs are taken care of by a nicely integrated eight-inch infotainment system. You get all the connectivity options like Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get an arkamy sound system, voice recognition, wireless phone charging and more. Boot space capacity is a decent 260-litres.
Performance Drive
Powering the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios are the same engines that power the Grand i10 and they boast the exact same specs. So you get a 1.2 litre 4-cylinder petrol and a 1.2 litre, 3-cylinder diesel and you can have them in five-speed manual or AMT transmissions. The petrol version which we drove, produces 82bhp and 115nm of torque.
The engine is very refined and power delivery is extremely linear. The meat of the torque is available at lower RPMs so passing slow moving traffic is no problem at all. What is a revelation though is the AMT gearbox. It offers seamless shifts with barely any jerks and works flawlessly when driven around town. It’s only when you really push down on the throttle that its rudimentary origins surface. Overall, what we do miss is a little more poke which would have made the car even more enjoyable.
On the ride and handling front, the Grand i10 Nios exhibits typical Hyundai behaviour. The steering has some weight but is a little vague at the centre. Ride is on the softer side but the rear does seem to get lumpy on the bad sections.
Conclusion
Prices for the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios start at Rs. 4.99 lakhs and goes up to Rs 7.99 lakhs. Now these prices are at least Rs 35,000 cheaper when you compare the top end model with the Maruti Suzuki Swift’s top end model. With a bucket load of features and a fantastic AMT gearbox, the Grand i10 Nios makes for very good value and is sure to attract more than just the millennials.

Opening
Just over a year ago, Hyundai launched the third generation for the i10 in India. It’s now called the Grand i10 Nios and since the launch we’ve already reviewed the petrol and diesel powered models, both of which you can find in our reviews section. Well, here we are back again with the NIOS and this time around with the one that’s powered by a turbo-petrol engine. It’s the first in the segment and we have driven it to tell you what it is all about.
Appearance Exterior
On the face of things, this turbo-petrol Grand i10 looks no different from the rest of the range, but look closer and you will find that Hyundai’s added a few special details that help this car stand out. Topping that list is this colour scheme that Hyundai has dubbed fiery red and is unique to the turbo variant. The fiery red has been combined with black roof and blacked out ORVMs for extra pizazz. Finally, you also get these cool looking turbo badges at the front and rear. This car is based on the Sportz variant of the Grand i10 NIOS and so you also get 15-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, projector headlamps and fog lamps, as well sleek looking boomerang shaped LED DRLs.
Appearance Interior
Hyundai’s signature shot has always been its offerings in the cabin and with the Grand i10 NIOS it’s hit that one cleanly past the boundary line. Like the exterior, the overall design of the cabin remains unchanged but there are little touches unique to the turbo petrol variant. The cabin’s an all-black affair with red piping in the seats and there are red inserts in the AC vents and climate control dials.
As we had said before, The NIOS, over its predecessor, has grown in size across all the dimensions creating more space inside. The plastics on all the touch surfaces is of quite high quality with the special fish skin pattern on the doors and dashboard adding just that little extra touch that sets the car apart.
The feature list is quite comprehensive too, with this variant getting a touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, climate control with rear vents, height adjustment for the driver’s seat, semi-digital instrument cluster with MID, power mirrors, and power windows. All versions of the Grandi10 NIOS get dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and seat belt pre-tensioners.
Performance Drive
Putting the turbo in Nios Turbo is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct injection unit which is the same as found in the Venue compact SUV, but here it has been tuned to produce 99bhp and 172Nm of torque. Like the Aura, turbo transmission duties here are taken care of by a five-speed manual.
The purpose of a small capacity turbo petrol engine is to offer good mid-range and driveability which this GDI unit does quite well. There's a linear build up post the 2000rpm mark which combined with the car's lightweight nature can propel you into three digit speeds quickly. In city driving conditions the availability of torque low down in the range means you don't have to shift as often, making your driving experience a much easier one.
Hyundai's budget cars have always placed an emphasis on comfort and that's evident in the suspension setup. It's able to absorb most bumps and imperfections but you get noticeable vertical movement over the really big imperfections on the road. The steering is light and easy to use but feels vague around the centre. At 2.5 turns lock-to-lock, it's a breeze to make U-turns and park in tight spaces. In all you get everything expected of a city car but now with some extra punch, thanks to the turbo petrol engine.

Conclusion
So we've driven the Grand i10 Nios turbo petrol and come away quite impressed with what's on offer. The turbo petrol engine offers good driveability and a mid-range which is crucial in a city oriented car like the Grand i10 NIOS. It's not the best handler in the segment but is more than up to the task to tackle our roads and highways. The Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS turbo is only available in the Sportz variant and is priced at Rs 8.71 lakh (on-road Delhi) with the dual tone variant that we have driven costing additional Rs 5,300.

Just over a year ago, Hyundai launched the third generation for the i10 in India.
